The
physician and dental societies wrote to Secretary Thompson asking
the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to impose a moratorium
on the DHHS " Policy Guidance on the Title VI Prohibition Against
National Origin Discrimination As It Affects Persons With Limited
English Proficiency (August 20, 2000)." In response, the nation's
leading health associations sent a letter to Secretary Thompson supporting
full implementation of the LEP policy guidance. The Alliance has taken
the lead in supporting this collaboration of leading health associations
advocating for language access to health services and most recently
(November 20, 2003) DHHS reaffirmed its policy in support of access
for LEP persons to health services.
It is vital to the Nation's efforts to eliminate disparities in health, that this policy guidance on limited English proficiency (LEP) continue to be fully implemented by DHHS. Click here to find some helpful links and background
