For Thursday, July 23, 2009 Edgar Gil at (202) 494-0508 (cell – day of ride only) Bike Rider's Message To Legislators Assembled In Philly: "Clean Up Our Air For Health's Sake"
July 23, 2009 PHILADELPHIA – Putting the spotlight on air pollution we encounter where we live, work, and even commute, Edgar Gil will ride his specially-equipped bike in Philadelphia as part of the National Conference of State Legislators' Bipartisan Bike Ride on Thursday, July 23rd. "I'm going to bring the HEAN equipment on the ride with me so while I am exercising I will also be monitoring air pollution levels, taking measurements throughout our eight mile trip," said Edgar Gil, senior health program manager at the National Alliance for Hispanic Health and member of the organization's Health and Environment Action Network (HEAN) Team. Mr. Gill will join dozens of riders, largely comprised of legislators and their staff participating in the National Council of State Legislators' Legislative Summit. The riders will assemble at Dilworth Plaza, on the west side of City Hall on 15th Street, between Market Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, at 6:30 am. They will depart promptly at 7:00 am, and will return to the starting spot no later than 8:30 am. The ride is about eight miles in length. Mr. Gil, who commutes to work on his bike each day in the Washington, DC area, will ride a bike specially-equipped with a HEAN Eco-Pac, complete with mobile pollution sensors, a GPS device, and a digital video camera. "Health and the environment go hand-in-hand," said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. "Edgar's participation in this ride will help encourage legislators from across the nation to continue to do their part to enact standards that better protect us all. It's a matter of good health." More information about Mr. Gil's ride will be available online at www.HEANaction.org where residents of 25 major cities – including Philadelphia - can also sign up for a new service that will send air quality reports to their mobile phones. Gil works for the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, which has initiated a remarkable national effort connecting communities with cutting-edge mobile air and water monitoring technology. The effort, the Health Environment Action Network (HEAN), was launched in four major U.S. regions: Brooklyn, New York; Brownsville, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; and Watsonville, California. It has been engaged in a program to monitor and document air and water pollution risks, support youth through environmental science summer camps, and develop community-driven plans committed to securing the right of all people to clean air and water. The program is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. ###
