Vision, Mission, and Programs

Vision

Strong healthy communities whose contributions are recognized by a society that fosters the health, well-being, and prosperity of all its members.

Mission

To improve the health and well being of Hispanics. The National Alliance for Hispanic Health is the premier science based organization focusing on Hispanic Health. Alliance community based members reach over 15 million Hispanic consumers throughout the U.S. Since 1973 we have grown from a small coalition of visionary mental health providers to a large, dynamic, and strong group of organizations and individuals. Our constituents are our members, the consumers served by our members, and the greater society that benefits from the health and well being of Hispanics. Since we were created we represent all Hispanic groups, do not accept funds from tobacco or alcohol companies, and are dedicated to community-based solutions.

Programs

As the nation's action, advocacy, and research forum for Hispanic health and well being, we inform and mobilize consumers, support health and human service providers in the delivery of quality care, improve the science base for accurate decision making by promoting better and more inclusive research, promote appropriate use of technology, insure accountability and advocate on behalf of Hispanics, and promote philanthropy. Specific programs include: capacity development of community based organizations, diabetes education and outreach, Hispanics in the Sciences, prenatal help lines, family health help lines, cultural proficiency, teen theatre as a tool for prevention, and consumer outreach in the areas of depression, ADHD, immunization, HIV/AIDS, women's health, osteoporosis, tobacco control, and environmental health.

Additional Comments from the Organization

We have excellent financial management and oversight as exemplified by our audits. Moreover, our programs have received national and international recognition. The most important achievement is the callbacks from consumers who used our helpline and want to thank us for the information we provided. We produced the critically acclaimed Salud! A Latinas Guide to Total Health, Body, Mind and Spirit (Harper Perennial and HarperLibros) that was selected as on the best health books in 2002 by the Library Journal; our video for parents on vaccines won the Golden Eagle Cine Award; and our web page won recognition by Links2Go.

Self Assessment

Each of our programs have an evaluation component and various outcome measurements.

Who We Are

Our goal is to improve health for all by using the Hispanic experience as a way to design a better system for health prevention and care. Activities: consumer and provider education, community programs, technology resources, help lines, teen theatre, policy development, advocacy, and research.

Balance Sheet: Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2006

Note: The balance sheet gives a snapshot of the financial health of an organization at a particular point in time. An organization's total assets should generally exceed its total liabilities, or it cannot long survive, but the types of assets and liabilities also must be considered. For instance, an organization's current assets (cash, receivables, securities, etc.) should be sufficient to cover its current liabilities (payables, deferred revenue, current year loan and note payments). Otherwise, the organization may face solvency problems. On the other hand, an organization whose cash and equivalents greatly exceed its current liabilities might not be putting its money to best use.
